Wat Phu Khao Noi or ‘temple of small mountain’ is the oldest temple on Koh Phangan and is located close to Thong Sala Pier & Town. This local attraction is small but allows you to view the ancient stupa with monks around the site in the morning.
The temple is believed to have been built in the 15 century and is made up of a white pagoda surrounded by eight smaller structures. The walls are decorated with upside-down ceramic bowls which is a unique feature of Wat Phu Khao Noi.
Wat Phu Khao was a great quick stop, taking no more than 20 minutes to explore, we decided to visit the temple in the morning on our way to Mae Haad Beach. Here’s everything you need to know about visiting Wat Phu Khao Noi.

Where Is Wat Phu Khao Noi, Koh Phangan
Wat Phu Khao Noi is located close to the main town Thong Sala and close to Phaeng Noi Waterfall. The temple is up a very steep hill and at the top is a small car park. The temple is on the way up to some of the best beaches in Koh Phangan such as Zen Beach making it the perfect quick stop to explore the island’s historical and cultural heritage.
How To Get To Wat Phu Khao Noi Koh Phangan
The easiest way to get around Koh Phangan island is via scooter; you can hire a scooter for around 200-300 THB a day. The drive from Thong Sala to Wat Phu Khao Noi takes about 10 minutes, depending on your route. Be mindful that the hill leading up to the temple is quite steep, so drive carefully.

What To Expect At Wat Phu Noi Koh
Wat Phu Khao Noi is a small temple perched on top of a steep hill. It offers a chance to see the oldest temple on Koh Phagan which features traditional Thai Buddhist architecture, stupas and golden Buddha Statues. In the morning you may see local monks going about their daily routine and they will often stop and chat to you and offer information about the temple.

While tourists are welcome to explore the temple grounds, it is important to follow proper etiquette when visiting religious sites in Thailand:
Dress Modestly, cover your shoulders and knees.
Remove shoes & hat before entering any temple structures.

Stand When Monks Enter, it is respectful to stand when a monk walks into the room.
