Things To Do In Sabah
Sabah is ideal for adventurers seeking Mount Kinabalu, world class diving and wildlife safaris. The area is in the north east of the island and includes the capital Kota Kinabalu, Mount Kinabalu, Sandakan, Sepilok, Kinabatangan and Semporna.
Kota Kinabalu: The Main City
Kota Kinabalu Night Food Market
The KK night market is located on the waterfront in the city and is a bustling hotspot for the evening. You can find fresh seafood stalls and have shellfish cooked to order. You can also discover local street food such as satay and grilled chicken. Here you can immerse yourself in the smoky haze, aromatic smells and culture of the city. Location 📌

Gaya Street Market
If you happen to be in KK on a Sunday one of the top things to do is visit the vibrant open air market. A mix of locals and tourists unite to explore stalls of handmade goods, clothing, souvenirs and local snacks. Don’t be surprised to see pet vendors selling pets from fish to kittens! Location 📌
The tallest mountain in Southeast Asia, Mount Kinabalu is one of our top bucket list things to do in KK. A challenge for hikers that promises panoramic views, the ascent of Mount Kinabalu takes place over two days. The 4095m tall mountain stands in Kinabalu Park where you can also find a canopy walkway and Poring Hot Springs. Location 📌
After a triumphant climb of Mount Kinabalu or just to relax you can visit Poring Hot Springs located in Kinabalu Park. Here you will find indoor and outdoor baths where you can soothe sore legs. As per many hot springs locals believe the natural minerals pose healing powers and health benefits. Location 📌
Just an hour from the city of KK you can find the Kiulu River which offers a white water adventure in the Kiulu Valley. This is a perfect family friendly activity as the rapids are gentle and great for beginners. The best time to visit for rapids is between April and October during the dry season when water levels are stable. Location 📌
Stay On The Kinabatangan River
One of our highlights was staying at Tungog Rainforest Eco Camp which is set on the banks of the Kinabatangan River. Here we trekked in the jungle, discovered the bats of Supu Cave and went on cruises down the river to see endemic wildlife such as proboscis monkeys. You can also see pygmy elephants however weren’t so lucky and unfortunately didn’t catch a glimpse of them. Falling asleep on a camp platform and waking up to monkeys chatting above us was truly a bucket list experience. Location 📌
Perhaps at the top of everyone's list of things to do in Sepilok is to see an Orangutan. You may be lucky enough to see a wild one on the Kinabatangan River but if not you can experience these semi-wild primates at The Sepilok Orangutan Centre. The Orangutans are known as being semi-wild due to the fact that the centre puts out food for them everyday, allowing the orangutans to come if they please. Location 📌
After visiting the Orangutans head over to the world’s first Sun Bear Conservation Centre, here you can learn all about the world’s smallest bear and view them from raised platforms. On-site there is also a gift shop as well as a small museum, which shows an interesting documentary about the bears. We recommend combining the two centres into a single tour, or if you’re staying nearby such as in the Sepilok Jungle Resort, they are within walking distance. Location 📌
One of the highlights of our time in Sepilok was our visit to the RDC. A nature reserve in the jungle where you can spot orangutans, hornbills and so much more! You can spend the day walking along the canopy skywalk then book onto the night walk to see the jungle in a new light, one with flying squirrels, tarantulas and scorpions. We highly recommend a visit to the RDC and it’s easy to walk to if you stay at Sepilok B&B. Location 📌
Scuba Dive At Semporna Dive Rig
Semporna offers a prime location to reach some of Sabah’s best dive spots such as Sipadan, Mabul, Semporna Dive Rig and Kapalai. You can also stay onboard the Seaventures Dive Rig if you’re looking for unique accommodation and an immersive experience. Location 📌

Visit The Sea Gypsies In Semporna
After diving one of the top things to do in Semporna is to visit the Sea Gypsies. This cultural experience allows you to learn about the traditions of the Bajau Laut, a group of sea nomads. Traditionally fishermen, the Bajau Laut live on the water of Semporna often without need to come to land. Their boats known as ‘lepa’ are decorated with vibrant colours. Location 📌
If you’re heading to Borneo looking for a pristine rainforest reserve then Danum Valley in the interior of Sabah is known for its rich biodiversity and conservation of wildlife. Here you can do some of the best trekking in Borneo alongside river tours while staying in Eco Lodges surrounded by ancient rainforest. Location 📌
Things To Do In Sarawak
Found on the Western side of Malaysian Borneo, Sarawak is perfect for people seeking an off-the-beaten track location with incredible cave systems, rich indigenous culture and quieter rainforest experiences.
Kuching Area
Go Spelunking in Kuching
The state of Sarawak is renowned for the limestone rock formations making it a great place to visit the underground world. The region is home to some of the top caves in Malaysia including Batu Cave, Fairy Cave and Wind Cave. Explore the breath-taking stalactites, stalagmites, and ancient murals hidden under the lush Borneo rainforest. Location 📌
One of the oldest national parks, located near Kuching, has a diverse landscape of mangrove swamps, rock formations and dipterocarp forests which are the hunting grounds of the leopard cat! Activities include hiking to secluded beaches, wildlife watching and photography, kayaking and immersing yourself in nature. Location 📌
A UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its limestone karst formations, cave systems and dense rainforest.
