Simploo Mini Composting Toilet Review
We went for a 12v Simploo Mini. The 12v model suited a Van that runs off primarily solar. We love that the new Simploo Mini has the option to change the vent position through pre-cut holes. This gives you the flexibility in a van build to try out different positions or move the position of your toilet if needed.
We also love that the pee capacity has increased to 9L which will give us more time off-grid. Another bonus is the built in pee alarm we had trouble with are pee alarm breaking for our Simploo Original so this is a great upgrade.
Another upgrade is the lever to open the solids compartment rather than a sliding hatch. The biggest change though seems to be the attached separator and lid, this will allow you to drive without attaching the pee lid, which to us is a big bonus and means no accidents can happen! We did sometimes forget to put the lid on or even take it off.
As the Simploo Mini is so new to us we haven't found many flaws. To me the main flaw of the mini is the weight. The toilet weighs 10kg which is a fair chunk in any van build and something you may want to consider.
Composting Toilet vs Chemical Toilet
Composting toilets and chemical toilets are the two choices you have for easy waste management off-grid. Composting toilets turn human waste into nutrient-rich compost. These toilets are known for their eco-friendly nature, significantly reducing water usage and contributing to sustainable living. On the other hand, chemical toilets utilise chemicals to break down waste and neutralize odours. While they are portable and often more compact, the use of chemicals raises environmental concerns and may require more frequent maintenance. You also need to find chemical disposal places, these are often found on campsites.
Feature | Composting Toilets (e.g., Simploo Original) | |
Waste Treatment | Decomposition into compost | Chemical breakdown |
Odour Control | Excellent | Chemical-based |

Environmental Impact | Low, promotes sustainability | Chemical disposal concerns |
