Rampestreken Hike 2024: A Guide To Rampestreken Åndalsnes
Known as the alpine village by the fjord, Åndalsnes is a great stop on any Norway road trip. With famous hikes such as Romsdalstrappa and Romsdalseggen this location is perfect for any hiker. You can also find the Åndalsnes Rampestreken Hike and Viewpoint as well as the gondola Åndalsnes, making this viewing platform accessible for a wide range of people.
Rampestreken is a 20 metre platform that extends over the town below giving you a breathtaking view of Romsdalsfjord and surrounding mountains. In this blog post we will go through the Rampestreken starting point, the length, difficulty as well as where to park for free.

Where Is Rampestreken Åndalsnes ?
Åndalsnes is a small town in west Norway at the top of the fjord region, close to Molde, Kristensund and Geiranger, it’s a great stop on any Norway Road Trip.
The Rampestreken Viewpoint is found an hour and a half up the Romsdalstrappa mountain trail which starts in the centre of the town or you can catch the Romsdalsgondolen, a Cable Car that will transport you up.
Where to Park for Rampestreken: Free and Official Car Park
There is an official car park located in Åndalsnes at the bottom of the trail head. Here the parking has a cost of Kr100 for the day. The car park was empty during early October so you won't struggle to get a spot if you're off season, however we were told in high season it gets extremely busy meaning we would advise arriving early.
We are traveling to Norway on a budget so we made it our mission to find free parking. We found a free, 3-hour spot just past the Grand Hotel. The spot has around 5 spaces and you can stay for 3 hours.

Rampestreken Starting Point
The starting point for the trail is on the right of the main car park. There is a signpost showing you the hikes in the area. The beginning of the hike is a metal walkway with handrails that takes you up the first steep section to Nebba which has views over the town. This section would be accessible to most people.
The trail is loosely marked by red T's. These can often be hard to see but if you follow the rough path through the trees you should be alright.
Rampestreken Hike Difficulty, Length, and Time
Difficulty: Moderate (Very steep climb on forest ground)
Time: 3 hours (There and back)
Length: 487m Climb and 487m Descent. Total: 974m
Height: 573m above sea level
Rampestreken Viewpoint Description
The hike up to the Viewpoint was steep but manageable, depending on your fitness level there are a few areas you could stop and take a break. The view gets better and better as you climb. We advise you to wear good walking boots as there are sections with loose soil, tree roots and ladders. As you reach nearer Rampestreken the forested path turns into stone steps built by the Nepalese Sherpas, you’re nearly there!
The viewpoint itself is spectacular. It is a 20m piece of metal extending over the tiny town below surrounded by mountains; the fjord stretches out as far as the eye can see. The last section of the viewpoint is a grid so you can see straight down the mountain below you.
At the top we were hit by a snow storm. Within minutes blizzard like conditions started meaning we only saw white. The weather on Rampestreken viewpoint surprised us as below was still calm, but I guess that's mountains for you. In about 5 minutes the snow had blown over and we were left with breath-taking views. The viewpoint had a handful of people but we had lots of time to take photos and appreciate the view. If you’re worried about crowds, visiting Norway during the shoulder seasons is a great idea as we had a lot of famous sites just for ourselves.
The way back down was more technical due to the recent rainfall, the soil was slippery and we fell a few times. You could opt to get the gondola back down, especially if the weather turns or you're feeling extra tired. We managed the hike, up and down, in exactly 3 hours with a good 15 minutes to enjoy the viewpoint.
When is the Best Time to Hike Rampestreken Åndalsnes?
Rampestreken Viewpoint is a Norway Bucket-list hike and most people head over to do this hike in the summer months of June - August making it super busy but you’re more likely to avoid clouds and get good weather.
We visited in early October and the mountains around were already snow capped. We were also hit by a snowstorm at the top, showing that Rampestreken's weather is unpredictable due to being on the side of a mountain. During the winter months, the weather conditions are too harsh to climb to the viewpoint at the top.
Gondola Åndalsnes - A Cable Car To Rampestreken Viewpoint
The Romsdalen Gondola can ferry you to the Nesakla mountain while you enjoy 360 degree views. From the Gondola it’s a 15 minute walk down to Rampestreken Viewpoint. You can choose to do a round trip of one way if you decided to only hike up (or down).
Eggen Restaurant At Rampestreken Viewpoint
If you keep walking past Rampestreken or if you take the Gondola you will find Eggen Restaurant. A restaurant 708 meters above sea level with fantastic mountain views and where you can enjoy some traditional Norwegian food.
Åndalsnes Camping and Where To Stay Near Rampestreken
If you’re in a motorhome or camping in Åndalsnes, you can head to Åndalsnes camping where they have lots of pitches. The campsite is a great starting point for day trips including the Rampestreken hike.
There's lots of accomodation in Åndalsnes including The Grand Hotel and Villa Haudalan Åndalsnes, both of which are close to the hike's starting point.

Book flights in advance - they can become expensive if you leave it last minute. Also don't forget Apple Airtags to track your luggage
Norway is vast, take it slow - don't feel the need to see everything if you only have a short time. Instead spend the time you have discovering the beauty and culture of the area you’re in… plus then you have an excuse to come back.
Hire a car or motorhome - in our opinion this is the best way to really see Norway. You get to drive down hairpin roads such as Trollstigen and explore the lesser known nooks of the country.
Be prepared for changing weather - it can be sunny one minute and snowing the next so pack for a range of temperatures and remember “there’s no such thing as bad weather, just inadequate clothing.”
Final Thoughts on Rampestreken Viewpoint
Rampestreken is a Viewpoint like no other, protruding high over the fjord with endless mountain views, it's definitely worth the steep hike. It’s also accessible to a wide range of visitors due to the Åndalsnes gondola making the hike down to the Viewpoint only 15 minutes rather than a 3 hour round trip. A unique destination that boasts a restaurant as well as the metal platform we think this should be added to your Norway road trip.
