Denmark Food Prices: Complete Guide to The Costs of Food and Drink in Denmark 2024

Road tripping through Denmark is exciting but can be expensive. We spent a lovely week in Denmark where we stopped off at the Møns Klint which is a must and we also sampled Danish Pastries – I mean you can’t go to Denmark without! However, the pastries in a café cost us £15, meaning it is expensive to eat out in Denmark it is much cheaper to stay in and cook. Therefore, here is a guide to Denmark’s supermarket prices.

To keep costs down we make a meal plan before the shop and then we stick to it! In Denmark we found it hard to work out the prices of certain items after coming from Sweden and Norway, everything looked much cheaper, but it wasn’t! Our average daily cost on food was around £13. Denmark's Food Prices are similar to Norway and Sweden.

We’ve spotted a few supermarkets around Denmark including Rema1000, Coop, Netto and Lidl. Lidl and Rema1000 are the budget places to shop. The prices below are from Rema1000, I’ve also written a blog on Rema1000 prices in Norway. It’s quite interesting to compare.

Why is Food So Expensive in Denmark?

Location is one answer but they also add a 25% tax onto their food which explains the high food prices in Denmark. We expected the food to be a little cheaper here than the other Scandinavian countries, however it still burns a hole in the pocket. Below we share some tips on how we travelled Denmark on a budget.

Tips to Keeping Costs Low When Shopping in Denmark

1. Danish Pastries - Sorry! No tips here they were worth the £15 and the café we went to was extra cosy.

2. Bulk buy before you go – Denmark boarders Germany so stock up before you cross the boarder.

3. Eat vegetarian meals – It goes without saying meat is expensive in Denmark so eating some vegetarian meals will save you money along the way.

4. Look for Supermarket own brands – The supermarkets do have their own brands so look out for cheaper produce

5. Choose Rema1000 or Lidl over other supermarkets

6. Pay with Revolut for low or no transaction fees and a good exchange rate. (Read more about Revolut here)
